SICHUAN, CHINA, May 13, 2010 — A total of 190 pupils supported by Emerson (NYSE: EMR) through “Project Hope 1+1 Hand in Hand” program in Nanjiang, Sichuan province, will complete their primary school education this year. Emerson held a special graduation ceremony today to congratulate them and wish them a bright future.
More than 70 students attended the ceremony in Nanjiang County today. Emerson sponsors and volunteers, led by Sara Yang Bosco, president of Emerson Asia-Pacific, and Colleen Law, vice president of Emerson Asia-Pacific Human Resources, attended the ceremony along with local officials.
Bosco gave an opening speech and her best wishes to the children, and encouraged them continue to work hard to strive for greater achievements. She also expressed her appreciation for the support by the local government, Sichuan Youth Development Foundation, Emerson divisions and employees.
“A proverb says, ‘Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man how to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.’ We hope we have helped you learn a little bit how to fish. At Emerson, we value education and knowledge is the key to a better life.” said Bosco.
Li Wang, the student representative of Nanjiang 2nd Primary School, showed gratitude to Emerson for its continuous contribution to children in need, and vowed not to disappoint those who helped them and had confidence in them. Li Wang said the students will continue their studies and contribute to society when they grow up.
At the ceremony, Emerson presented gifts to the pupils and special awards to those who had outstanding results. The pupils also prepared various gifts for their Emerson sponsors.
In addition to the Nanjiang graduation ceremony, Emerson volunteers went to remote areas like Yueba and Shahe to visit students who could not participate in the Nanjiang ceremony due to the distance. Another ceremony will be held for pupils in Guang Wu Shan County on May 14.
